Mining PS unveils roadmap for reopening of Dabel gold mines in Marsabit

The troubled mining sites were shut down on March 14, 2024, after clashes between rival groups of miners led to seven deaths.

Mining Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has unveiled a strategic roadmap for the reopening of the Dabel gold mines in Marsabit County.

In a meeting attended by Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali and Senator Mohamed Chute, the PS outlined the steps for revitalising the troubled mining sites that were shut down on March 14, 2024, after clashes between rival groups of miners led to seven deaths.

The roadmap, which he delivered on behalf of Mining CS Ali Hassan Joho, focuses on rehabilitating mined areas and establishing regulated zones for artisanal miners to ensure safe, sustainable, and profitable operations.

To initiate the process, PS Mwangi commissioned earthmoving equipment, including shovels, graders, and excavators, which will be deployed to backfill open pits and shafts left behind by previous mining activities. These measures are intended to curb rampant illegal mining and prevent associated hazards.

"Our goal is to establish a safe, secure, and profitable mining zone where artisanal miners can earn a decent living without disruptions, and disputes," said the PS.

Key resolutions made during the meeting include the demarcation of specific zones for artisanal mining which will be done by the county government.

The county will also invest in social amenities like water, healthcare, and security for miners and their families to support the resumption.

In return, the national government, through the Ministry of Mining, will allocate areas for artisanal miners to operate within cooperatives, ensuring equitable access to resources and future expansion.

The timeline for reopening the Dabel gold mines will depend on how quickly these measures are implemented.

Governor Muhamud lauded the roadmap as a transformative initiative, noting that it addresses long-standing safety and environmental concerns while offering artisanal miners a regulated and dignified framework for earning a livelihood.

"I'm pleased that all six communities in the Moyale Constituency have come together to support the opening of the Dabel mining site. We've mapped out a clear plan to make this happen, ensuring everyone gains from this opportunity," the governor said.
